Peoria woman must repay $170,000 she stole from elderly mother

PEKIN - A Peoria woman battling cancer must repay $170,000 she stole from her elderly mother, leaving the victim almost penniless.

Carole Rodgers, 62, also was sentenced Monday to four years of probation, and faces a six-month jail term if she falls behind in her restitution.

Rodgers, however, avoided prison for using her power of attorney to drain what a prosecutor stated was "hundreds of thousands of dollars" from her 86-year-old mother's bank accounts over five years.

Other relatives of the victim, who is now deceased, indicated that they were satisfied with the punishment and restitution set for Rodgers, whose attorney said she has cancer.
