D.C. judge slashes Jesse Jackson Jr.'s child support payments

A judge in the District of Columbia on Thursday slashed the monthly child support payments ex-U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. must make to former Ald. Sandi Jackson as their high-profile divorce case continues in two jurisdictions, court records show.

Judge Robert Okun of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia handed down the 11-page order after Jackson Jr. contested a previous ruling requiring him to shell out $1,529 monthly for his two teenage children, ages 13 and 16.

The convicted felon argued the judge forgot to subtract $1,200 he contributes from social security payments for his bipolar disorder and depression. Okun's Thursday ruling requires Jackson Jr. to provide his estranged wife with $329 in payments each month. Jackson also pays about $1,000 for the children to attend private school in the capital, attorneys said.

Jackson Jr.'s Chicago attorney lauded the ruling, praising Okun's "thoughtfulness" and "focus."
