State to study leaky Capitol dome

Illinois officials are going to undertake a comprehensive study of the Capitol dome after secretary of state workers noticed small pieces of concrete fell from the inside portion of the outer dome.

Described as about the size of marbles, the pieces do not represent an emergency situation, said Harl Ray, senior project manager for Secretary of State Jesse White, whose office is in control of the Capitol.

“The dome itself is in no danger. There is no structural damage,” Ray said.

The area where the problem is occurring is not visible to the public. The inner dome, which people see when they are inside the Capitol, rises to a height of about 235 feet. However, that is not the structure people see from the outside of the building. The outer dome rises far above that, topping out at 361 feet.
