In her first official act as Chicago mayor, Lori Lightfoot signs order aimed at limiting aldermen's powers


In her first official act, newly inaugurated Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot signed an executive order Monday aimed at limiting the power aldermen wield in city departments — the first of many reforms she plans for City Hall.

But the order, which bans city departments from deferring to aldermanic wishes “in their decision-making practice unless expressly required by the Municipal Code of Chicago,” isn’t the end-all solution to Chicago’s corruption woes, as Lightfoot acknowledged shortly after signing it.

Nor is it the end of all aldermanic influence, as the City Council will have to make changes to the zoning code to restrict aldermanic power.

“This is the start, not the (end), of a series of good government ethics reforms we’ll be bringing to the city,” Lightfoot said.
