Election officials: candidate for Rockford City Council 'likely' violates Hatch Act

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Signs for 6th Ward candidates line 11th St. on Rockford’s southside. On a windy Wednesday, Ald. Aprel Prunty (D-6th Ward) and Lawrence Steward II (D-6th Ward candidate) have their names rock back and forth.

Just off 11th St., Steward stands in the Schnucks parking lot – making his case for a seat on Rockford City Council.

“I can’t see a problem and not want to fix it,” he contends. His background as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service inspires his next step aiming for city hall. “You’re literally touching and seeing everyone in your community,” Steward describes of life as a postal worker.

Before his candidacy for the 6th Ward, Steward appeared at a rally for letter carrier protections in August of last year and honored his fallen coworker Jay Larson following the Rockford stabbings.
