As hunters prepare for Saturday's start of deer season, an animal welfare group has asked a judge to put a stop to rifle-hunting on public land.
The Center for Wildlife Ethics is asking the LaPorte Circuit Court to throw out a state agency's rule that would have allowed rifle-hunting in state and federal forests.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources issued the emergency rule on Nov. 3 as a way to fix what some described as a mistake in a recently passed state law that banned rifles in public forests.
"I'm concerned that the DNR can subvert the legislature," Laura Nirenberg, an attorney for the Center, told IndyStar. "They are exceeding their statutory authority."

(34,069 posts)Does not stop fire arm deer hunting, only high power rifles. Some rifles, shotguns and hand guns can still be used to hunt deer. Here in Michigan those rules are in effect for the lower part of state. High power rifles are ok in the less populated northern half of the state.

(24,145 posts)We have John Deer, 3 Jane Does, and one Baby Doe. I haven't seen them around the barn or pastures lately. We're in the middle of a bunch of gun nuts here.
On the other hand, my brother just sent me a pic of a 6 point buck he bagged. And the old disabled guy (that has a small herd of grandchildren living with him) that works for me part time got one too. It makes me sad, but at least I know those two families will eat every scrap of it.

(31,433 posts)We would butcher a hog sometimes, or share beef with another family. There used to be more pheasant around here, and we could get one of those once in a while.
Times are better for us now. But having the venison was a godsend for us at times in the past.
I saw three deer tonight when my husband and I were out just after dark. It was nice to see them running around.
