Holcomb calls training workers 'the defining issue of the decade'

Gov. Eric Holcomb made re-training Indiana workers the top priority of his administration in his State of the State address Tuesday night.

Holcomb used his speech to identify more than a million Hoosiers who need better skills and to set a goal of educating or retraining 55,000 Hoosiers over the next year who didn’t finish college or don’t have a high school diploma.

“Our greatest challenge is that too many Hoosiers lack the education and skills for the jobs that are here today and being created tomorrow — nearly all of which require a post-secondary education," he said.

Holcomb said 85,000 jobs are unfilled in Indiana because employers can’t find people with the right skills. New job commitments and retiring Baby Boomers will only add to that number, he said.
