Lawsuit filed over Ball State frat-house face slapping

MUNCIE, Ind. – An odd form of greeting reportedly practiced at a Ball State University fraternity this week resulted in a lawsuit against the frat and one of its members.

In his Delaware Circuit Court 1 lawsuit, James Edward Bolt III, a former member of Theta Chi Fraternity, alleges he was injured last September when he was struck in the face by frat brother James Robert Katona.

According to Bolt’s lawsuit – filed by Muncie attorney Joshua Brown – it was a common practice at the Theta Chi Fraternity house, at 1100 W. Riverside Ave., for members to greet one another “by slapping each other in the face in a playful manner... with an open hand and light force.”

The lawsuit acknowledged both Bolt and Katona frequently greeted one another, and other members of Theta Chi, with slaps to the face.
