Cook Medical to appeal $3 million jury award
Cook Medical plans to appeal an Indianapolis jurys decision to award $3 million to a Georgia woman injured by a defective blood clot filter the company manufactured.
An Indianapolis jury ruled last week in favor of Tonya Brand, a Georgia woman who filed a lawsuit in 2014 claiming Cooks Celect Vena Cava Filter had malfunctioned.
Brand had the filter implanted before a 2009 surgery, and two years later, she pulled a piece of the device out of her leg. Further investigation revealed another piece of the device had migrated through her body, and multiple surgeries couldnt remove the fractured debris. Brand now faces numerous health risks and will need ongoing medical monitoring.
The case was the final in a series of three lawsuits meant to gauge how more than 4,000 cases brought against Cook might fare, and the only one not decided in Cooks favor.
