Price tag for new IU Health Bloomington Regional Academic Health Center rises to $557M
The cost of constructing the new Indiana University Health Bloomington Regional Academic Health Center along the Ind. 45/46 Bypass has risen well above the original estimate.
The project was initially projected to cost around $400 million. IU Health South Central Region President Brian Shockney said recently at a Bloomington/Monroe County Metropolitan Policy Organization meeting that the total budget to build the regional health center is now $557 million.
The budget for the IU Health portion of the project was increased to $503 million after the initial planning phase identified several enhancements be made to build the kind of facility IU Health envisioned our community would need for the next century, IU Health spokeswoman Teri deMatas said. It also covers site and utilities infrastructure, which was not a part of the original estimate. Identifying enhancements for the project along the way is not unusual in a large build project such as this.
Along with IU Healths portion, Shockney said, $54 million from IUs budget would go toward constructing an academic building near the new hospital. He said the academic building will be home to IUs school of nursing, social work, medical science and speech and hearing.
