HAMMOND A Morton High School teacher is under investigation after a 43-second viral video shows a student challenging the use of the N-word.
The high school chemistry teacher has been placed on administrative leave while School City of Hammond officials investigate the video, Superintendent Scott Miller confirmed.
One version of the video posted to Instagram on Saturday had more than 67,000 views and 1,300 comments as of Monday morning. The video was reposted by rapper T.I. on Facebook later Saturday with the caption "You're a KING lil bro" and "We Salute You Kid."
In the video, a Morton student, who is black, is seen challenging the teacher, who is white, in his use of the N-word.

(10,285 posts)... young man's behavior. I think the teacher handled it well, from what I saw... he did not escalate. I would not recommend any consequences for either the student or the teacher. There was nothing on the tape, but other students can speak about how the teacher used the word. If the teacher used it in a way to provoke the student - attention getting, but unacceptable - that would be wrong. I have seen this discussion about the word... it ending in "...er" versus it ending in "...a" and I think discussion is needed. I think people need to know the ways the word is used, and what is offensive.

(57,529 posts)apparent that the teacher did not handled the situation well. I disagree with your assessment, especially since there is a protocol in place at the school for use of such words and he teacher violated it by initiating use of the word.
