Gov. Eric Holcomb backs GOP health care bill that cuts Medicaid funding

Gov. Eric Holcomb on Wednesday backed a GOP alternative to the Affordable Care Act that would significantly reduce Medicaid spending, the source of two-thirds of federal funding received by Indiana for a program used by about 1 in 5 Hoosiers.

The House is scheduled to vote Thursday on the bill, though it’s unclear if Republicans have enough votes to pass it over united Democratic opposition.

Nearly all of Indiana’s eight GOP members of Congress have said they will vote for the bill. Rep. Trey Hollingsworth,R-Jeffersonville, and Republican Sen. Todd Young have not taken a position.

Holcomb is sending a letter to congressional leaders urging passage of the bill, according to spokeswoman Stephanie Wilson. She called the legislation a "critical first step to reach meaningful reform for our nation’s health care system and replace an overly burdensome unsustainable entitlement."
