Iowa GOP's platform encourages repeal of laws recognizing same-sex marriage

A majority of delegates at this weekend’s Iowa GOP state convention voted to encourage repeal of any law allowing marriage that’s not between one man and one woman. Iowa County delegate Brad Sherman, author of the platform plank, said the legal recognition of same-sex marriages violates religious freedom. “The attack on marriage and the family that we have seen is part of a strategic effort to destabilize our culture and destroy our nation,” he said.

Thomas Hansen of Winneshiek County said having government define marriage is the problem, because it has led to edicts from the court and congress. “If you want to use the Bible to define what marriage is, I’d like you to show me in the Bible where God says we need a license to do it,” he said.

Patrick Geren of Pottawattamie County was also among the minority of delegates who opposed adding the policy statement to the party platform. “People have the right to disagree with our religious beliefs and to follow their own conscience,” he said.

Gary Leffler of Polk County said the party needs to stand on principle. “We still believe in marriage between a man and a woman and I don’t care what the left says,” Leffler said.

A similar statement was included in the party’s 2022 platform.

1. My religion doesn't care - May I impose my religion on you?

My recollection (and this is my recollection only) is that Christ never sanctified or spoke on what marriage is and is not. He merely went to some wedding and turned water into wine. This has been 'interpreted' into all the bullshit religious marriage rules.

Maybe Paul said something about marriage. Christ never said much about anything. What passes for Christianity is mostly the hate that Paul spewed.

My understanding of marriage in the US is that the state started stepping in in Alabama after the civil war to make rules to stop any inter-racial marriages.

But those that call themselves 'christians' like to imagine that Jesus himself is reaching down from Venus or someplace to thank them for forcing their views into policy that all others must follow or go to jail.

When did Iowa move and nestle in between Mississippi and Louisiana.

They were excited to be able to marry in Iowa ahead of the rest of the country. But lately they have felt their marriage and just being LGBTQ is under assault. Honestly can't blame them for leaving.

Apparently, he doesn’t care what either the Iowa or US Supreme Courts says, either, although I don’t have much confidence in either court continuing to respect stare decisions.

I didn’t know they would let politics influence their decisions.
