Fort Madison to consider new fire station on November ballot for safety of firefighters

FORT MADISON, IA. (KHQA) — Fort Madison could be looking at a new fire station in the near future. With the current one having been in operation since 1959, those at the station believe it's time for an upgrade.

The Lee County ballot in November will ask voters if the Fort Madison Fire Department should get bond or grant money that wouldn't exceed $12 million to design and build a new fire station. According to Fire Chief Joey Herren, the money would mostly come from a federal USDA grant.

"We have to make equipment last, because of the cost of it here. So, that's one of the main reasons, and the building, we've outgrown it for the day's response that we have to do," Herren said.

A new station would allow them to keep more equipment inside and ready to go, allowing for quicker response times. This would have a big impact on a station that does over 1,800 runs per year.
