SPOTLIGHT RACE: Mike Zimmer for IA-SD35 (Special Election)


Living and Serving in Iowa

Mike has been married to Tammy for 42 years. They are the proud parents of five children—Erin, Katharine, Jessica, Adrienne, and David—and have ten grandchildren. Mike is an active member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Long Grove and a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus. He also dedicates his time to community service, acting as the volunteer driver coordinator for Humble Dwellings and serving as the Central DeWitt School Board President.

Mike is a graduate of North Scott High School, holds a BA in Industrial Technology Teaching from the University of Northern Iowa, and earned an MA in Educational Leadership from the University of Iowa. His career in education spans decades, including 19 years as an Industrial Technology teacher at East Central and Central DeWitt High Schools. He then transitioned into administration, serving as an assistant principal for 5 years and principal for 12 years, with 2 years at North Scott and 10 of those years at Pleasant Valley High School. Following this, he spent four years as the Director of Secondary Education for the Pleasant Valley Community School District. Currently, Mike works as a Career & Technology Education Consultant for the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency.

Throughout his career in education, Mike has made significant contributions. He expanded dual enrollment, Advanced Placement, and apprenticeship opportunities for high school students. He also developed innovative programs, including outdoor classrooms, student-built airplane clubs, and specialized support for students with disabilities. Furthermore, he secured over $120,000 in grant funding for projects focused on improving accessibility and enhancing student learning. His dedication to education has earned him several awards and recognitions, including Iowa State University Industrial Technology Teacher of the Year, Regional Track Coach of the Year (in 2000 and 2002), the Milwaukee School of Engineering Excellence in Teaching Award, and the PNB Aviation Club Award for leadership and vision.

Beyond his educational pursuits, Mike is a small business owner, operating Mike Zimmer Construction. He is an avid RAGBRAI rider and has completed five marathons. His commitment to personal growth reflects his dedication to improving the lives of Iowans.

Mike Zimmer is running for office because he believes in strong leadership that supports Iowa’s working families. He is committed to fighting for stronger public schools, better wages, and opportunities that foster real financial stability. He understands that a thriving middle class is crucial to Iowa's future. With his extensive experience in leadership and innovation, Mike is ready to bring bold, people-first solutions to the State Senate, ensuring that Eastern Iowa’s communities have the resources they need to succeed in today’s economy.
