Ia US 3rd District Rep. Young calls for more government intrusion? Flint MI

The U.S. House Overnight and Government Reform Committee cross examined officials on problems that began in 2014, when the city's water source was switched from Lake Huron to the Flint River. Officials say the change caused an unhealthy increase in lead levels in the water, threatening local residents--most notably children. Iowa Congressman David Young is among those monitoring the Flint water situation. Young tells KMA News he and other congressional colleagues have several questions.

In addition to more frequent testing, the Van Meter Republican hopes the Flint water crisis will lead to more oversight and more transparency in the operation of municipal water systems.

"I think transparency always brings about the best accountability," he said. "I think this will demand more transparency, and other municipalities so that people, the users, know what's in their water."
