Branstad could oversee one last legislative session before China departureIowa Gov. Terry Branstad could preside over one last legislative session before departing to China as U.S. ambassador.
He told reporters Monday he plans to continue serving as governor until he is formally confirmed by the U.S. Senate. At that point, he will resign and clear the path for Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds to be sworn in as Iowa's next governor.
“The lieutenant governor and I have worked as a team. She’s in on all the decision-making and has been from the beginning,” he said. “So we’ll work together as long as I’m here, and then once I’m confirmed then I will resign. … We don’t know when that will be exactly, but I suspect it’ll be well into the session.”
President-elect Donald Trump will be able to formally nominate Branstad for the ambassadorship after taking the oath of office Jan. 20. Then Branstad said he plans to meet with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee before he would be confirmed. There is no clear timeline for that process, Branstad said.
