(10,146 posts)It was restored to its Victorian grandeur in the 1980s. The law library off the rotunda is amazing with its wrought iron spiral staircases, tile floors and Gutenberg bible. You can see it on YouTube.

(10,144 posts)and that does add to the overall ambiance of the library. I'm going to watch again because I sort of missed the part of how those first books arrived. Thank you so much for posting it.

(10,146 posts)The first books in the library were brought by the first Territorial Governor, although he would have brought them to Iowa City, the territorial capital, and first state capital.
The "old" capital building still stands on the University of Iowa campus. It's often shown on TV during U of I football games.

That's wonderful.
I take a look at the one at the Library of Congress every time I'm over there. They have a Great Bible of Mainz too, which was copied by scribes.
I stopped at the Iowa Capitol, in May 1993 as I was headed out to Portland, Oregon, but I didn't take a tour.
Thanks for writing.

(10,146 posts)and I may be mistaken about the bible. There is a book with vellum pages on display just to the left of the door leading from the rotunda into the library. I believe it dates from the late 16th century.
