Gov. Reynolds weighs options for $100 million in state budget woes; Democrats rap GOP policies

Less than two weeks after assuming her new post, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds is already being forced to manage her first budget dilemma.

Her options range from imposing across-the-board budget cuts to calling a special session of the Iowa Legislature to make selective cuts or to borrow money from the state's cash reserve funds.

State fiscal analysts released a report late last week showing Iowa faces a budget shortfall of nearly $100 million for the fiscal year ending June 30 because of a continued decline in state revenue that had been forecast.

The Republican-led Iowa Legislature has already approved $118 million in budget cuts this year and pulled another $131 million from the state's cash reserves to fill financial gaps.

That should shave off a 30 or 40 million.
