Originally there was an AM station associated with the TV station but it was sold off years ago. It changed its call sign and is now a sports station.

KGAN (formerly WMT) was a great station when I was growing up in Northeast Iowa in the 1960s. Hey, they had Dr. Max in the afternoos, and Leo Greco on Saturday nights!

I lived between 2 TV markets (Mason City, IA -- KGLO/CBS, Austin, MN -- KAUS/ABC, Rochester, MN -- KROC/NBC) (Cedar Rapids, IA -- WMT/CBS, KCRG/ABC, Waterloo, IA -- KWWL/NBC).

Both KAUS (originally KMMT) and KCRG were bit players until the late 1960s when they upgraded their facilities and tower heights. Even then, KCRG was a joke. I remember their anchor interviewing Henry Kissinger and breathlessly asking him if he intended to run for president. Kissinger looked at him like the idiot he was and dryly replied that he wasn't a natural born citizen. It was obvious the guy didn't know understand Kissinger's point, but he was at least smart enough not to ask.

KCRG was the TV outlet of the Cedar Rapids Gazette (CRG) until 2015. I believe it was Iowa's last independent TV station. I don't think any Iowa TV station is locally owned now.

Gray also owns KWQC in Davenport which is in my area. KWQC used to be WOC for the old timers. What little TV news I watch is usually KWQC. My opinion is that they are slanted to the right but not nearly as badly as a Sinclair station.

I wrote them about my concerns of slanted coverage and got a nicely worded "fuck you" in return. As I said, I simply don't want watch much TV news and when I do it is usually for weather.

Channel 8 in Moline used to be owned by the New York Times and it was a damned good mews station. Not sure when they were sold, but their quality seemed to drop several years ago.
