GOP Power Grab: Bob Vander Plaats on the Iowa Supreme Court?

(email from Iowa democrats)

State House Republicans are attempting a power grab to change the way Iowa judges are selected. They want to remove our long-held merit-based system and replace judges with their party activists, like Bob Vander Plaats.

You may remember in 2010, when social conservative, and failed candidate for governor, Bob Vander Plaats, led a campaign to remove three state Supreme Court justices who were part of the unanimous ruling that legalized same-sex marriage.

Iowa’s courts are considered some of the best in the county. They been called “efficient, productive, professional and, with exceedingly rare exception, free of corruption.”

Bob Vander Plaats won’t be happy until our every branch of government is completely under his control. His lobbyist is quoted as saying, "Iowa has one of the most activist supreme courts in the country.”

This new Republican plan replaces merit-based judges with social conservatives who have long wanted to erase equal protections, legalize discrimination, and remove a woman’s ability to make reproductive decisions with her doctor.

House Democrats won’t allow another attack on the courts and our state’s constitution.

Please help us keep a judicial system that works for all Iowans by donating $20.10 to our cause.

Vander Plaats? I am sure that power hungry asshole would love an appointment.
