and my small town says they are going to be doing classroom teaching in August with optional masks and extra hand sanitizer.
I don't know that my 6th grader will be participating in that.
My oldest two are going to UNI where they plan to start classes early, in person, with mandatory masking and social distancing except in the dining halls and the dorms. They are both in marching band which probably sprays lots of particles into the air (200+ kids).
And yet, people keep saying "well, it's a hoax" or "it only kills a few people".
Just needed to get that out among those who might understand.

(41,356 posts)That sounds like a dumbass idea if you ask me.
What is the point of having masks in the classroom and then an hour later having them eating together in the dining halls and living together in the dorms? The virus doesnt care where you are.
I blame a lot of this lack of a plan on that moron governor Kim Reynolds. It made me sick how she sat next to Trump shaking her head in agreement with every delusional thing he said.

(16,254 posts)One high school graduate in our family is having an open house, tomorrow, which will be outside. I had already begged out, since I have been locked down going on 25 weeks, but they have been nervous about it even though Iowa was fairly quiet. I feel sorry for her since she's missed her birthday celebration, prom, graduation and most of the softball season, but...
I thought the colleges were going to go until Thanksgiving and then go online for the rest of the year? That didn't make any sense to me, but then no one asked my opinion. Our elementary schools are kind of in limbo, but working out several different possibilities.
Well, here we go. Darn!

(17,099 posts)Our county has less than 100 cases, but nearly everyone here works in Linn or Johnson counties (Cedar Rapids/Iowa City).
We're surrounded by places with more cases.
My middle son was a senior this year. He missed everything. His last performance in the school musical, Jazz Championships that they qualified for for the third time ever in our school's history, prom, etc.
Sorry for your graduate too. It sucks, but they'll all be able to tell the story when they are older! At least that's what I tell my kid.

Funny, but I told my great-granddaughter the same thing. Great minds, and all that. At least the kids have peers experiencing the same thing. Sorry for your son, as well.

(18,470 posts)I'm sorry but I and every 2020 graduate at every level got fucked over due to our government's response so let's dispense with the "being able to tell the story when they are older" lines. It's of precious little value to me right now.

(17,099 posts)to you, to my son, to all the kids I've come to know at the high school.
You're right, you lost the last half of your senior year and all that entails.
It may not be of value to you right now, but it is what my son keeps telling me...he also says that since we can't change it, we may as well move forward.

(18,470 posts)Im sorry but it honestly is very patronizing to tell any 2020 graduate how they should feel. I cant have a ducking nice thing anymore.
