KCK Democrat files to be candidate for state insurance commissioner

A retired health industry administrator from Kansas City, Kan., filed Thursday to seek the Democratic nomination for state insurance commissioner.

Nathaniel McLaughlin became the first Democrat to file for the job now held by Ken Selzer, a Republican who isn’t running for re-election, but is seeking the GOP nomination for governor.

In a statement, McLaughlin said he would apply decades of experience in the health care industry for the benefit of everyday Kansans.

“I want to ensure that all Kansans have access to affordable health care and aren’t forced to choose between paying this month’s rent and making sure a loved one will receive the medication they desperately need,” he said. “I’ve had an up-close view of the incredible problems Kansans are dealing with related to the enormous cost of health insurance.”
