Economist Laffer suddenly big giver to Kentucky GOP
FRANKFORT, Ky. Arthur Laffer, the supply-side economist and major influence in a national tax-cutting movement for decades, emerged last month as a big Republican campaign donor in Kentucky.
Over a three-week period, Laffer, never a big donor in Kentucky before, wrote 20 checks of $1,000 each to Republican candidates running in hotly contested races for state representative. He gave an additional $9,000 to the Republican Party of Kentucky.
And five close associates of Laffer, whom the economist said share his pro-growth economic philosophy, gave in a similar pattern. Combined, Laffer and his associates have provided a windfall of at least $154,000 in the month before the election $47,000 to the Republican Party of Kentucky and $107,000 to various GOP candidates running for the Kentucky House of Representatives.
The contributions are listed in pre-election reports filed with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance and the Federal Election Commission this week.
