Gov. John Bel Edwards: Time to explore to 'fiscal cliff' options, decide if special session 'will be productive'

Gov. John Bel Edwards is urging Louisiana House Speaker Taylor Barras to form a bipartisan working group to come up with options for addressing the more than $1 billion budget shortfall the state faces next year.

"It's time for constructive dialogue," Edwards wrote in a letter to Barras that the governor's office also distributed to reporters.

Barras, R-New Iberia, is out of state and could not be reached for comment.

Legislators last year approved a temporary one-cent sales tax hike to shore up the state's finances. It's scheduled to expire next July.
