Desiree Charbonnet and Latoya Cantrell are heading to a November mayoral runoff.

Eighteen people were on the ballot as New Orleans voters chose a successor to Mayor Mitch Landrieu, a term-limited Democrat who leaves office next year.

Going into Saturday’s election, Charbonnet, Cantrell and former state civil court Judge Michael Bagneris led pre-election polls.

City Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell and former judge Desiree Charbonnet earned spots in a runoff for New Orleans mayor, guaranteeing the city will elect its first woman mayor in the Nov. 18 runoff.

The unofficial count from Saturday's (Oct. 14) vote saw Cantrell take 39 percent of the vote to Charbonnet's 30.

So happy about this! Both are women of color. I can't make up my mind on who I favor.
