Gov. John Bel Edwards leads the pack for re-election, but will incumbency help or hurt him?

Robert Travis Scott was struck by the stark difference between the top two candidates at the Public Affairs Research Council gubernatorial forum in Baton Rouge exactly four years ago.

U.S. Sen. David Vitter, the Republican front-runner from Metairie, was polished and well-rehearsed in his answers, holding a thick policy pamphlet prepared by a highly professional campaign brimming with resources, noted Scott, who is PAR’s president.

Then-state Rep. John Bel Edwards, the Democratic candidate from Amite, seemed every bit the long shot. Scott saw that when Edwards answered questions, he glanced at notes he had scrawled on a piece of paper.

“One fellow had a high-octane, highly staffed approach,” remembered Scott. “The other guy was just trying to get his jalopy started every morning.”

john bel edwards has been a very good governor. that does not matter.

west of the mississippi there is only one issue. edwards is an anti abortion democrat, but that does not matter either. they believe democrats eat fetus for breakfast.

we have a jungle primary. edwards will finish second to the most rabid conservative repub. he will not finush far ahead of third place, an extremely rabid repub. IF the repub winner is slightly saner than the family values coalition and IF we can get out the vote in orleans and east baton rouge there is an outside chance that edwards may be reelected.

everyone in louisiana who reads this please get out there an remind your friends and families of the leadership it took to solve the fiscal mess that jimdal left us, and that john bel edwards was incredibly effective during 2 big floods and the baton rouge police incident.

even if you don't like that he is anti abortion and has to compromise with a legislature of reptiles, at least he is appointing democrats to the jobs and committees that will make them better candidates in the future.

thanks. the election is in november.
