Louisiana's last gasp at minimum wage hike dies in Senate

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana's last gasp at a minimum wage hike is likely dead for this year after Sen. Troy Carter conceded Tuesday he doesn't have the votes to pass his bill.

Senate Bill 155 by Carter, D-New Orleans, would let voters decide whether the state should establish a minimum wage higher than federal law. It's a constitutional amendment that needs two-third approval in the Senate, or 26 votes.

The amendment would set a $9 minimum wage in Louisiana.

"We're woefully short of votes," said Carter, who after presenting the bill returned it to the Senate calendar, where is will likely stay.
