Grambling mayor opposes $18 million security barrier around university
Grambling Mayor Ed Jones said he opposes additional fencing around Grambling State University and would challenge it in court if need be, according to a report from The News Star.
The proposed $18 million barrier fencing project is meant to control traffic and increase security for students, faculty and staff at the university.
Two deadly shootings occurred on the Grambling campus in the fall, one Oct. 13 in front of the student union and another four days later in the quadrangle. Since 2017, at least four people have been killed and 15 wounded in shootings on Gramblings campus. Outsiders people who arent students or university employees were responsible for most of the shootings.
The university campus is situated along the citys main road, and fencing that street off would hurt surrounding businesses financially, Jones said.
