WESTWEGO, La. (AP) A 4-year-old boy in Louisiana, sitting in the back of a car with two younger siblings, fatally shot himself in the forehead with a gun he found while his mother and another adult smoked marijuana in the front seat, authorities said. An autopsy Monday found that Jarion Walkers gunshot wound was self-inflicted, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said at a news conference late Monday, The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate reported.
It was a contact wound to the forehead, right above the right eyebrow, Jefferson Parish Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich said. The shooting happened about 10:45 p.m. Saturday in the city of Westwego, a suburb of New Orleans. Jarion was sitting in the back seat with two siblings age 22 months and about 1, authorities said. The little boy was rushed to a hospital, where he died of his injuries, the sheriff said.
The adults, who admitted to smoking marijuana at the time, said they heard the shot, Lopinto said. No one has been arrested, though detectives will complete the investigation and turn the results over to the Jefferson Parish District Attorneys Office, Lopinto said. I dont think it was appropriate to make an arrest at this point, he said. They just lost a child, and it certainly wasnt intentional, by any means.
The gun used in the shooting belonged to the childs father, authorities said. The boy is believed to have found the weapon under the seat, Lopinto said.

(30,214 posts)yes it was... they INTENDED to buy a gun and leave it, LOADED, where a child might find it.
They should be in prison and never allowed to be parents again.

(12,885 posts)and it is speculation (at this point) to assume that either were aware of the placement of a concealed weapon. Until I find out more (and much more incriminating) information against these two - I can afford to be compassionate towards the their devastating loss.

(12,885 posts)nor a big proponent of 2A 'rights.' (I think that would probably fall into the category of slogan rather than a tenet) However - I can't see the relevance of your comment. (you're proposing to charge the 4 yr old with his own killing?) There is certainly negligence involved whenever a very young child gets his hands on a weapon (although in this case we don't know if the negligence belonged to the adults present) - but in that case I would think it would be more germane to trot out something like, "responsible gun owners .." I could jump on that wagon in a NY second.
None of which prevents me from finding compassion and sympathy for the family in a horrific situation.

(25,291 posts)It is not just a slogan, it is a main point to prevent gun legislation. This is not an isolated incident, toddlers kill themselves and kill other people. The problem is a dead toddler is a tragic heartbreaking situation and because of this many times no one is charged with a crime.
I know of several people in my area who claim to keep loaded guns throughout their house. Some even mount strobe lights on their gun to blind the intruder. Should people so paranoid be allowed to own a gun? It isn't illegal to keep loaded guns in one's house which is where most of these accidents occur. It is illegal to keep a loaded gun in a car, I believe. If we can't even pass background check legislation which would make it harder to get a gun we will never stop senseless killings.
It is easier in America to get a gun than it is to vote. I have to give out my driver's license number and the last 4 digits of my SS number, and my signature must match before my vote will be counted.

(3,732 posts)In "They lost a child...", the "they" clearly refers to the parents. It was the father's gun. I don't think it is going too far out on a limb to assume that the father placed the gun there and was well aware of it.
I realize there is another person involved who was in the car at the time - but there is no way I would absolve the parent who owned the gun from blame here.

(12,885 posts)about the secreted weapon at all. And yet - post I responded to is outraged that any sympathy be directed towards the family, and demands both parents (plural) be locked away. I find that pretty judgemental (and a bit draconian) - particularly if we are not yet in possession of all of the facts. Kind of a 'shoot from the hip' knee jerk reaction, so often found in these public forums. You're free to disagree with my take on this (and obviously do) but I'm okay with that. We can agree to disagree.

(9,106 posts)This is my generic response to gun threads where people are shot and killed by the dumb or criminal possession of guns. For the record, I grew up in the South and on military bases. I was taught about firearms as a child, and I grew up hunting, was a member of the NRA, and I still own guns. In the 70s, I dropped out of the NRA because they become more radical and less interested in safety and training. Some personal experiences where people I know were involved in shootings caused me to realize that anyone could obtain and posses a gun no matter how illogical it was for them to have a gun. Also, easy access to more powerful guns, guns in the hands of children, and guns that werent secured are out of control in our society. As such, heres what I now think ought to be the requirements to possess a gun. Im not debating the legal language, I just think its the reasonable way to stop the shootings. Notice, none of this restricts the type of guns sold. This is aimed at the people who shoot others, because its clear that they should never have had a gun.
1.) Anyone in possession of a gun (whether they own it or not) should have a regularly renewed license. If you want to call it a permit, certificate, or something else that's fine.
2.) To get a license, you should have a background check, and be examined by a professional for emotional and mental stability appropriate for gun possession. It might be appropriate to require that examination to be accompanied by references from family, friends, employers, etc. This check is not to subject you to a mental health diagnosis, just check on your superficial and apparent gun-worthyness.
3.) To get the license, you should be required to take a safety course and pass a test appropriate to the type of gun you want to use.
4.) To get a license, you should be over 21. Under 21, you could only use a gun under direct supervision of a licensed person and after obtaining a learners license. Your license might be restricted if you have children or criminals or other unsafe people living in your home. (If you want to argue 18 or 25 or some other age, fine. 21 makes sense to me.)
5.) If you possess a gun, you would have to carry a liability insurance policy specifically for gun ownership - and likely you would have to provide proof of appropriate storage, security, and whatever statistical reasons that emerge that would drive the costs and ability to get insurance.
6.) You could not purchase a gun or ammunition without a license, and purchases would have a waiting period.
7.) If you possess a gun without a license, you go to jail, the gun is impo

unded, and a judge will have to let you go (just like a DUI).
8.) No one should carry an unsecured gun (except in a locked case, unloaded) when outside of home. Guns should be secure when transporting to a shooting event without demonstrating a special need. Their license should indicate training and special carry circumstances beyond recreational shooting (security guard, etc.). If you are carrying your gun while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you lose your gun and license.
9.) If you buy, sell, give away, or inherit a gun, your license information should be recorded.
10.) If you accidentally discharge your gun, commit a crime, get referred by a mental health professional, are served a restraining order, etc., you should lose your license and guns until reinstated by a serious relicensing process.
Most of you know that a license is no big deal. Besides a drivers license you need a license to fish, operate a boat, or many other activities. I realize these differ by state, but that is not a reason to let anyone without a bit of sense pack a semiautomatic weapon in public, on the roads, and in schools. I think we need to make it much harder for some people to have guns.
