Mother sues Ascension School Board after son's injury from bullying required emergency brain surgery

The parent of an Ascension Parish public school student has filed a lawsuit against the school board, saying her son was bullied and battered last month by fellow band members at Donaldsonville High, incidents that led to emergency brain surgery for her son.

School officials never responded to her complaints after the incident, the mother, Heather Johnson, says in the suit.

In an interview this week, Johnson said the incidents described in the lawsuit took place at a recent band practice in the high school's stadium.

Her 14-year-old son, identified in the suit as J.W., has some developmental delays and is enrolled in the school's special education program, while also taking several hours of traditional classes each day, Johnson said.
