Large police presence on CCC might be related to search for suspect in officer killing (New Orleans)

Law enforcement officers are on the westbound Crescent City Connection to determine whether the suspect who killed a Westwego police officer Friday morning might have jumped off the bridge. WDSU reporter Travers Mackel said several police officers made their way to the bridge before 11:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a person on the bridge.

Investigators have not said whether the person is Sylvester Holt, who is accused of killing Westwego Officer Michael Louviere and a woman in Marrero. The gunfire was the result of a domestic situation in which Holt was involved and which led to a vehicle accident, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said westbound lanes are closed as police investigate. Motorists are being diverted at Tchoupitoulas Street. Officials said congestion has reached Carrollton Avenue on Interstate 10.

Motorists should seek an alternate route to avoid delays.

As of a few minutes ago the suspect was still on the bridge, smoking a cigarette and talking on his cell phone. We can see the CCC from our office downtown, but this incident is taking place on the far side of the bridge . . . lots of people in our high-rise are trying to watch this with binoculars. I don't think I could watch . . . scary!
