Opponents Of GOP Tax Bill Refuse To Leave Collins' Portland Office

About a dozen members of the faith community say they won’t be moved when Sen. Susan Collins’ Portland office closes Thursday evening.

Rev. Jim Gertmenian has been part of the sit-in action since 11 a.m.

“We’ve been told that we cannot stay, and some of us have said we cannot leave, and so at 5 o’clock there will be something of an impasse, and we’re not exactly sure how that will play out, but that’s where we are right now,” he says.

The group is demanding that Collins vote no on the tax overhaul bill working its way through Washington. They say the bill will provide tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of the poor.

Collins is responding in a statement that she “respects their right to protest” and she says under the bill, a single mom with one child earning $35,000 would receive $1,100 back from the government rather than owing income tax, and families earning less than $24,000 would owe no tax.

Decided I would reland on DU using this thread. As a born and bred son of Maine, I am loving the entire debacle known as our US Government. It is not the Democrats that left the US Reservation, it is the Republicans.

I've got a lot to say, but I am happy that I can have a great re-entry in the Maine forum and I want to thank you for the great job at
DU! Your reporting, by State, is really important and I encourage you to continue your effort to provide relevant content from every state.

Idea for you: Start a blog/website and connect with like-minded people in all 50 states and curate content that is relevant to our meta viewpoint on what is happening in the USA. Use DU to connect that info to the State forums.

Oh well, just spitballing on how you can take your skills up a visible notch...

Regards.

I actually did run a separate Website for a short time during 2016. However, it required a lot of time to run the site and it needed more participation from others to make it viable. In addition, it raised concerns of "spamming" when I cross-referenced the other site to DU even though I did not have receive any financial compensation from advertising or solicit financial contributions.

I also expect that I might have to limit my posting during 2018 for other reasons so if I'm going to relaunch a site then I need tio get through the upcoming hurdles and also investigate turning it into a for-profit site. I don't know if I want to take on the liabilities that may entail. For the time-being I intend to remain on DU since this is a more effective platform for reporting the news to a larger audience.

I remember back when I first joined - which would have been DU.1! And you and I challenged DUers to post a pic of any Bush with any bin Laden - the closest we got was one of Poppy Bush with the Saudi royal family. Those were the days! It's great to see you again!
