Not Popular Enough: Maine Secretary of State drops official Libertarian Party status
After only two years of being a thing, the Maine Libertarian Party is no more at least for now.
On Monday the Maine Secretary of States Office announced the Libertarian Party no longer has party status in Maine because they did not reach the threshold of 10,000 voters in the General Election.
Only 6,168 voters in Maine were enrolled in the Libertarian Party and will now be classified as unenrolled. Those Mainers will have to re-register as Libertarian by completing a Maine Voter Registration Application and checking the box that says other qualifying party instead of the three other pre-printed options.
As you might expect, newly former members of the Libertarian Party are not taking their unpopularity well and have suggested that the administrative move was a threat to their 1st and 14th Amendment rights, posting on their official Facebook page that it was unacceptable in a free society.
