Hundreds of Bowdoin students protest for living wage for hourly campus workers

Almost 400 students rallied at Bowdoin College on Thursday to demand the administration stop mislabeling and underpaying hourly workers on campus.

Many of these workers, who are paid $13.97 an hour on average, say they often need to work second or third jobs to keep their families fed. Some workers even reported that they were told by their supervisors to visit a local food bank if they can’t afford food.

“One job should be enough,” said Ben Ray, a low-income junior from North Yarmouth who co-founded the Bowdoin Labor Alliance, a coalition of students, staff, and faulty that is fighting to raise wages and improve working conditions for hourly workers, such as housekeepers, on campus.

“Bowdoin has the money, and we must recognize that workers are the ones who make this place look and feel like $2 billion every single day,” he continued.
