Harris campaign in Maine touts drug savings plan on anniversary of Inflation Reduction Act

Freeport resident Kate Brogan’s 11-year-old son Nathan told her to “give them hell” as she left Friday morning to join a discussion in which she explained a Kamala Harris presidency would secure his future access to needed healthcare.

Nathan is becoming well-versed in healthcare policy because he has to, Brogan explained. Nathan has had Type 1 diabetes since the age of three and needs daily insulin injections to stay alive.

While deductibles and copays leave their family with significant diabetes-related expenses, Brogan said Maine law provides some cost consistency by capping the price for insulin at $35 per month for everyone, a change the Legislature enacted in 2020. But, Brogan said she fears that could change depending on who is next elected as president.

Brogan joined healthcare providers and former elected officials in downtown Portland on Friday to discuss how the election could dictate the future of drug affordability. The conversation was held on the two year anniversary of President Joe Biden’s administration signing into law the Bipartisan Inflation Reduction Act, which lowered prescription drug prices as well as addressed other issues such as reducing the government budget deficit and investing in clean energy.
