Orono special election draws 5 candidates

The window for candidates to file for Orono’s May 13 special election to fill former council member Matt Johnson’s seat closed on March 18 ahead of the start of early voting on March 28.

Five candidates — Jon Schwingler, Bruce Lemke, Aigul “Gigi” Simpson, Todd Trettel, and Ryan Kanive — will appear on the ballot.

Schwingler ran in November’s general election against Steve Persian, Jacqueline Ricks, Maria Veach, and Scott Wellman, garnering 8.1 percent of the vote.

Johnson resigned from his seat effective Nov. 12, 2024. With over two years remaining on his term, state law requires his seat be filled via a special election with an interim appointment. Cities are required to draft a special election ordinance and specify under what circumstances they will hold a special election prior to the next general election.
