If/when the whole Bay, or major parts of it freeze THROUGH would be a BIG DEAL!

(16,741 posts)To Tangier Island in Virginia. I bet you didnt think the state of Maryland actually owned an icebreaker, but apparently the bay freezes often enough that it needs one. Both Smith Island and Tangier Island are not connected to the mainland so they get frozen in sometimes.

(137,633 posts)Can't say I'm surprised, tho never thought about it specifically. I live a few miles from the Bay, on the Patuxent River which FROZE last week; has defrosted now.
