Bagnall defeats McConkey: Democrats win a seat after 20-year lockout in Anne Arundel district

Democrat Heather Bagnall appeared to defeat longtime incumbent Del. Tony McConkey Friday night after a week-long count of ballots, a shattering turn of events in one of Anne Arundel County’s Republican strongholds.

As of 8:25 p.m. Bagnall had 184 more votes than the Severna Park Republican. If the results hold, Bagnall would join incumbent Republicans Michael Malone, R-Crofton, and Sid Saab, R-Crownsville, in District 33.

Bagnall declined to comment, saying she would wait for the results to be certified next week.

McConkey, a controversial delegate who has won re-election despite being disbarred and losing his real estate license, has three days to petition a recount of the results after they are certified by local canvassers.
