Maryland legislature overrides Gov. Larry Hogan's vetoes of immigration bills
Maryland legislators overturned Gov. Larry Hogans veto of a bill that bars local jails from housing detainees for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and prohibits police from asking people about their immigration status during traffic stops and investigations.
Advocates of the legislative action described it as one of the most significant pieces of immigration reform to pass in Maryland since the enactment of the Dream Act, a 2012 state law that provides in-state tuition grants to undocumented immigrants.
This is an extraordinary moment, said Cathryn Paul, manager of government relations and public policy for CASA, a grass-roots immigrant advocacy organization. Its a major step forward in making Maryland a safer place for immigrants and a place that treats immigrants with dignity, just as the [bills] title suggests.
The General Assembly, which is in Annapolis for a special session on redistricting, also overturned the Republican governors veto of a measure that bans the Motor Vehicle Administration from sharing personal information, including facial recognition data, with immigration officials.
