That’s a long time and a lot of money. It’s an important artery for the Baltimore region.

Given that the port was closed since the accident, it illustrated the importance of the bridge and the port are to the region. The new bridge will have better protection for the piers, I’m sure.

When the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel complex was being planned, the Department of Defense insisted that there had to be tunnels so naval vessels could navigate in and out of the military ports in Norfolk in the event of a bridge collapse. Tunnels cost more than bridges.
