NEW: The central Montgomery County tornado had a path length of 26 miles (updated from 12 miles)

-- from Poolesville to Ashton. This preliminarily ranks as 2nd longest on record in Maryland, only trailing 2002 La Plata tornado.

The National Weather Service confirmed late Thursday that at least seven tornadoes struck Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia on Wednesday, a historically significant outbreak for the region.

The five tornadoes confirmed in Maryland so far places the June 5 outbreak among the top 15 on record in a single day. As the Weather Service may well confirm additional tornadoes in the days ahead, this event could rise in the rankings.
