Data shows 8,600 Massachusetts elevators lack inspection

BOSTON —Data from the Department of Public Safety shows that about 8,600 elevators in Massachusetts have not had their yearly safety inspections as required by law, despite a budget increase that allowed for more inspectors.

The Boston Herald reports that data released Tuesday shows that the agency inspected 79 percent of roughly 41,000 elevators, meaning about one-fifth of the state's elevators have not been inspected.

A department spokesman says the agency currently has 55 inspectors, just one more than it had last May when a woman was injured in a fall down Fenway Park elevator shaft after a Red Sox game.

An analysis shows that the department's budget this year could have increased the staff to 70 inspectors.
