Marthas Vineyard lighthouses moved 129ft inland in $3m operation

A lighthouse on the Massachusetts island of Marthas Vineyard, among the most endangered historic landmarks in the US, is to begin a trek to a new home further inland.
The $3m project to move the Gay Head Lighthouse will prevent the 160-year-old structure from tumbling down the rapidly eroding cliffside.
The beacon was a critical waypoint for mariners navigating the sometimes foggy coastline during the heyday of the whaling trade, which was centred on Massachusetts communities such as Marthas Vineyard during the 1800s.
Today it is a popular tourist destination on the sparsely populated western edge of the famous resort island, which also is home to the federally recognised Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe.

(3,457 posts)1. We have the opposite problem at the Sandy Hook NJ Lighthouse...
A longshore current brings sand from points south and deposits it at Sandy Hook.
The lighthouse was built in 1764 about 500 feet from the ocean. It is now 5500 feet from the water.

Those cliffs are made of clay. Literally, clay. I've got before-and-after pics of a big section of the cliff breaking away and crumbling to the beach on one of our visits. An old WWII cement bunker lies on the beach, many yards from the cliff which has long since been washed away. Its a truly beautiful place. We're spending a week out there in July.

The folks moved it 300 ft inland.
Shit happens on the coast.
It's called erosion.
