Missing Library Art Located 80 Feet From Where They Should've Been Filed

The Boston Public Library announced that the missing Rembrandt and Durer prints, dated 1643 and 1504 respectively with a combined value of over $630,000, have been located.

As it turns out, the two pieces of art were misfiled—but during a widespread search, Conservation Officer Lauren Schott located them "in Row 14B, Bay 3 on Shelf 2, approximately 80 feet from where the items should have been filed."

News of the finding comes too late for BPL President Amy Ryan, though, who after a Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday resigned from her position effective immediately. She will still step down as planned.

“We’re thrilled to have found these treasures right here at home,” said Ryan in a statement. “They were found safe and sound, simply misfiled. BPL is still committed to enhanced security and a full inventory, but today is a day of celebration for the entire team at BPL. The staff couldn’t be happier after hundreds of hours of searching. I want to thank the FBI, Boston Police Department, and US Attorney’s Office for their work throughout this period.”

That's great, but why is a public library "filing" artworks to begin with? Why not display them? merrily Jun 2015 #1
The BPL does not have enough wall space to show 1/10 of their collection. n/t unhappycamper Jun 2015 #2
Then maybe they need to sell off some of the collection? merrily Jun 2015 #3

If they can. Some of it may be bequests limited to use by the library.

Still, the whole thing seems like a waste of art that people could be enjoying somewhere.
