He’s always businesslike, John Farrell. And he tried to be yesterday afternoon.

The 53-year-old manager of the Red Sox had an announcement, a team spokesman said. General manager Ben Cherington walked into the small press conference room at Fenway Park first, with other members of the front office behind him. David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia stepped inside, wearing workout clothes while sweat was dripping down their foreheads. Then came Farrell. He sat at the podium, light glaring off his shiny red jacket.

Insurmountable expectations and inconsistent results have forced him to explain every decision he’s made since arriving in 2013. This decision wasn’t even his, it had come from a team of doctors, but surely it was the hardest for him to explain.

He’ll be starting chemotherapy on Tuesday, he said. He was diagnosed with lymphoma, Stage 1, on Monday. It’s treatable, it’s localized, it’s highly curable and the stoic baseball man insists he’ll be back to manage the Red Sox again next spring.
