Report: Swampscott players were naked in hazing incident
Saturday, October 3, 2015
Zuri Berry, Matt Ingersoll
Five members of Swampscotts high school football team were completely naked and performing exercises at the teams practice field in a hazing incident that led to the forfeiture of the teams varsity game today.
The incident was detailed in an investigation by the schools superintendent, which was brought to the schools attention after police were called to the practice field Sept. 25 responding to noise complaints at a bonfire.
The undressed football players were performing a variety of exercises and athletic drills, while other team members stood around shouting, according to a statement from Superintendent of Schools Pamela Angelakis, who described the incident as a gathering called the Sophomore 50, a tradition for sophomores on the football team.
It was determined by the High School Principal that the activity that took place was inappropriate under the Swampscott Public Schools Code of Conduct and general expectations for our students, Angelakis said in the statement, and not the kind of behavior that we expect of our students and student-athletes.
