The City of Newton will pay a $125,000 settlement to the family of a 10-year-old Needham boy who was attacked by the Police Departments K-9 last November, city officials said.
The boy received wounds to his torso and arms during the dog attack, which took place in Needham, Newton City Solicitor Donnalyn B. Lynch Kahn said Thursday. She said the boy has fully recovered physically, but still carries emotional scars.
There was no indication anything like this would ever happen, no one meant for it to happen, but you have to do what you can to make it right, Kahn said.
Kahn said the K-9 unit, which consisted of just that one dog, was disbanded after the November 2014 attack, and there are no plans for the city to acquire another animal for the Police Department.
