Family lays soldier to rest, 65 years after he went missing

Family members in Everett on Tuesday finally laid to rest a soldier who fought in World War II and the Korean War, 65 years after he went missing in action while fighting in North Korea.

The remains of Army Sergeant Christopher Vars were returned to his family on Sept. 9, after extensive DNA testing and research using North Korean documents matched the remains to his cousins and nephews.

His remains were returned to the United States in 1993 as part of a series of shipments that the North Korean government sent from 1990 to 1994.

US officials believe that the 208 boxes handed over by the North Koreans contained the remains of at least 600 US military personnel who fought there during the war, the statement said.
