Former Kent County commissioner (D) looks to take back seat from incumbent (D) in Aug. 6 election

KENT COUNTY, MI – A former Kent County commissioner is running for a chance to take back his old seat from an incumbent on the Kent County Board of Commissioners in the Democratic primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

Former commissioner Robert Womack, who previously served three terms on the board, is challenging incumbent Tony Baker in the Democratic primary for the county board’s 17th District seat. Baker was elected to the Kent County Board of Commissioners in 2022 after running for Womack’s open seat.

The winner of the Aug. 6 primary battle will go on to face Republican candidate Jason Gillikin, who is running unopposed in the primary, for the two-year seat in the Nov. 5 general election. Gillikin, 47, is a small business owner who works as a principal consultant at Gillikin & Associates, Inc.

Commissioners are elected to two-year terms from districts across Kent County that are roughly equal in population. The 17th District seat represents a large portion of Grand Rapids’ southeast side.
